About This Calculator
Your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body burns at complete rest — just to keep your heart beating, lungs breathing, and cells functioning. It is the foundation of every calorie estimate.
Mifflin-St Jeor Equation
- Men: 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) − 5 × age + 5
- Women: 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) − 5 × age − 161
This formula is considered more accurate than the older Harris-Benedict equation and is the standard used by most modern calculators.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good BMR?
Most adults have a BMR between 1,200 and 1,800 kcal/day. It depends mainly on lean body mass, height, and age — larger and more muscular people burn more at rest.
Is BMR the same as TDEE?
No. BMR is calories burned at total rest. TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) multiplies BMR by your activity level to estimate calories burned on a normal day.
Why does biological sex matter?
On average, men carry more lean mass than women at the same height and weight, so their resting calorie burn is slightly higher. The formula adjusts for that difference.
