About This Calculator

The U.S. Navy method estimates body fat from simple circumference measurements. It is far more practical than calipers or a DEXA scan and reasonably accurate for most people.

The Formulas

  • Men: 495 ÷ (1.0324 − 0.19077·log₁₀(waist−neck) + 0.15456·log₁₀(height)) − 450
  • Women: 495 ÷ (1.29579 − 0.35004·log₁₀(waist+hip−neck) + 0.221·log₁₀(height)) − 450

Take measurements at the narrowest waist point and the fullest hip point for best results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this as accurate as a DEXA scan?

No — DEXA and hydrostatic weighing are more precise. But the Navy method is within a few percent for most people when measurements are taken carefully, and it is free.

What is a healthy body fat range?

For men, roughly 10–20% is fit to average; for women, 18–28%. Essential-fat ranges (6% men / 14% women) are unsafe to maintain long term.
